A dynamic and productive meeting with a range of exciting outcomes was held in Kuala Lumpur last week. Issues discussed included the upcoming APIN General Assembly, ways to develop the network and raise awareness among potential members, a new capacity building initiative that will be launched by APIN, as well as preparations for infoDev's 3rd Global Forum on Business Incubation.
The meeting of the Asia Pacific Incubator Network Steering Committee was attended by representatives from throughout the region. They included: Julian Webb (infoDev), HK Mittal (India), K Suresh Kumar (India and secretariat), Naowarat Ayawongs (Thailand), Dr Tuan M Pham (Vietnam), Annuar Saffar (Malaysia and AABI), Michi Barcelon (Philippines), Amanda Kenyon (infoDev), Mr Saidim (Malaysia), Ahmad Shiraz (Malaysia), and CR Swaminathan (India).
The meeting focused on Planning for the AABI Regional Workshop and General Assembly, which will take place on August 5-7, 2009, in Coimbatore, India. The theme of the workshop will be “The Global Downturn – An Opportunity for Incubation”. A promising program has been put together featuring internationally recognised speakers who are sure to be very popular and attract a sizable audience, as well as a program of cultural events for all to enjoy. The program will give ample opportunity for participants to get involved with a variety of presentation formats, from keynote speakers to workshops and round table discussions. A formal invitation and booking forms will be posted on the iDISC website soon.
Other issues discussed during the Steering Committee Meeting included the development of the Asia Pacific Incubation Network, such as ways to let people know the network is up and running and how to increase membership. The team also discussed APIN preparations for the upcoming infoDev 3rd Global Forum on Business Incubation to be held in Brazil in October 2009.
Another exciting new APIN initiative is a Capacity Building/Training program developed specifically for Incubator Managers, which will be held in India in November 2009 with special guest and internationally renowned expert Mr. Martin Hemmings. For all those who cannot join the training in person, Dr. Tuan M Pham from the Vietnam CRC-TOPIC Business Incubator is in the process of developing an online training program specifically for incubator managers. While the API Network is still young, it has made great progress in a short time. This meeting demonstrated that there are many hardworking, committed people throughout the region doing a great job to show how incubation and business development should be done, and to spread the word about the success of business incubation.
